Thank God We Weren’t Born Dogs
When I watched the movie “Cheaper by the Dozen” starring Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt years ago, there is one scene that was particularly stuck in my mind. After the family of fourteen”two parents and twelve children, hence the title”moved into a new neighborhood, several scenes were devoted to showing the new things that the kids needed to adjust to. It was then that the camera cuts across the street where a high-powered executive woman was running on heels and keeping a tight hold on a leash that was tied around the neck of a running child.
It was a very funny scene but disturbing, one in which you can’t seem to decide if you should laugh or not. But as a Steve Martin film a lot of audiences had let that pass. It is supposed to be a comedy film after all. And we know that a true and loving parent will never tie a leash on her child. If there is a need to take out the children for a bit of sunshine, parents will frequently use baby strollers and certainly not something as inhumane as a leash.
Funny that the clip had made me reflect a bit, that I am very thankful that I wasn’t born a dog or that my mother and certainly most mothers I know would never do such a thing. Now when dogs are riding in a car, unless if they get car sick and be immobile, it might be quite a job to ensure that they stay in place because you can’t really strap them with seat belts, can you?
