The Right Kind of Furniture for Newborn Babies
Pretty much every parent out there knows that when a child is born, everything in the home changes: from the general atmosphere and emotional tone of the house right down to the smallest safety details and furniture selections. In fact, furniture represents one of the biggest changes that parents will have to make inside the home to accommodate the arrival of their newborn.
When it comes to altering your current furniture setup at home and purchasing new furniture to accommodate your new child, no issue should be given higher priority than the baby’s safety…it is the card that simply trumps all others (representing other concerns such as color, size, and similar aesthetic issues).
You’ll have to make sure that all furniture you have had prior to the arrival of your newborn child doesn’t present any unnecessary risks; that is to say, all jagged edges, pointy corners, etc., will need to be taken care, just like protruding nails, screws, etc. Also, things such as stairwell guards and childproof cupboard and cabinet latches will need to be implemented.
Then, when it comes to buying furniture intended strictly for use by/with your newborn baby, make sure that you buy from a retailer that specializes in baby furniture…it’s just not the same to get such items from any old store. Though the difference may not be readily visible to the naked eye, with time and experience you will learn just how important this issue really is.
You will most likely come to possess several new items of furniture due to the arrival of your new baby, and so you’ll want to make sure you get the right items. Your kid will of course first and foremost need a proper crib and other furniture to store baby supplies and so forth, but furthermore having some furniture for the kid to enjoy him or herself will be a good decision, all of which implies broad furniture changes in your home to properly welcome the little rugrat!
With regards to providing a good place for your new child to catch some Zs, it is important that you purchase a safe, proper crib or cot. The most crucial aspects here (as always, having to do with safety concerns) will be proper sidebars that are able to be lowered and raised and that can be securely latched into place, with a childproof mechanism and set at a maximum height that is taller than the infant him or herself.
As an accessory to the baby crib, you might want to consider a cot-top changing station that can easily be mounted and dismounted. Such an item will make the process of changing diapers before bedtime as easy as possible. Alternatively (though many parents like having both options), many shelf units and bureaus include changing stations on top.
Finally, every kid needs a good place to store all their many toys. Along with the child’s crib, the toy chest is likely to receive the most wear and tear over time, so go for a sturdy build here, though of course don’t get something that is so heavy your kid won’t be able to even lift the lid!
