Halloween Costumes At The Eleventh Hour
Each year, millions of people spend weeks planning for and getting ready for the festivities of Halloween. But there are just as many people out there who wait until the last possible moment to even begin thinking about costumes. While things like decorations and candy can be obtained the day of, more important decisions such as what costume to wear usually requires a little more thought. Last minute Halloween costumes, like their planned counterparts, can be just as creative and unique.
Don’t panic. The important thing is to stay calm and think. Waiting until the last minute to throw together a creative costume doesn’t mean it won’t be good. Rationally, catalog the various items around your home. Cardboard boxes, loose fabric, glitter, and face paint can all be transformed from random items in a junk drawer into a great Halloween costume.
The gold standard for last minute costumes is, and most likely always will be, the ghost. A sharp pair of scissors and a plain white bed sheet are all you need. You could even throw a humorous twist in by using something other than white. A tie dye ghost would be hilarious! This outfit will also most likely garner you a number of compliments, due to its classic appeal.
A creative and memorable robot costume could be constructed from all of those old unused cardboard boxes cluttering up the garage. Enough of them to cover your abdomen, legs, and arms, some paint, and a few hours to let it dry is literally all you need. Paint robotic designs on them, cut holes in the top and bottom of each box, and you’re set!
You might find something good in your closet or attic. If your parents or grandparents will let you go through their old things, you could discover a gem. If you could find clothes from a different time period, they’d be a period costume and the hit of any party. An old suede jacket and hat or a 50s skirt and pink neckerchief, or any other combination is all you need.
A pair of black sweatpants and a bandanna will allow you to throw together a quick ninja costume in literally just a few seconds. Other props like plastic swords or throwing stars could be borrowed from the toy box of a younger sibling or cheaply purchased at a dollar store on your way to the Halloween party or other event.
A little bit of fake blood and some foundation make-up are sufficient to create a zombie costume. Applying the foundation and fake blood and messing up your hair will go a long way. In fact, adding a little bit of fake blood to plain regular clothes will make a seemingly well thought costume for trick or treating.
If you’re really desperate and don’t have anything else on hand, you could wear pajamas. A terrycloth robe or a matching pair of colorful thermals both make great last minute outfits. These may not seem like costumes to you, but it will look like you had planned it for weeks. Go as a small child or toddler by adding pigtails or a lollipop to your pajamas. You could go further by adding exaggerated freckles with a tip of a mascara brush, or put on a lot of rouge for rosy childlike cheeks.
Don’t miss out on all the Halloween fun because you don’t have a costume. Look around the house, put something together and go out and have a great time!
