Rarely Known Baby Facts
Growing up is something that, if we’re being honest, starts at conception. In one moment there is nothing more than a few cells and almost immediately vital organs are being built. That tiny ball of cells only needs forty weeks to grow and form a human being capable of living on its own. Even after birth the changes happen quickly-personalities and decision making seem to happen almost at once. You probably already know a few facts about babies, like that they cannot change their own diapers and that they don’t yet know how to speak and that it takes them a while to figure out how to move on their own. Here are some facts about babies and childhood development that you might not know.
Every day is a surprise when you have a baby! Whether or not you are ready to know this, at least fifty percent of what you think you know about babies is wrong. You will probably learn at least a few new things when you read this article.
Did you know already that babies are not very good at telling colors apart? Not only does it take a while for the synapses in a baby’s brain to fully connect, their eyes take a few months to mature as well. This is one of the reasons why babies respond better to primary colors whey they are used in a room or on toys. Bold reds, blues, greens and even black and white are best for babies. In the eyes of a baby, a lot of pastel colors look pretty much the same.
A baby is not born with a solid skull. This is one of the main reasons that adults need to be careful when they are holding newborn babies. Your baby’s “soft spot” is nothing to play around with-if you are not careful you could cause your baby serious harm. About three months after your baby is born its skull plates will have started to fuse together and you won’t have to be quite so careful with the soft spot at the back of his or her head. You do still need to be careful though because it can take up to eighteen months for the frontal parts of the skull to calcify and harden. Most babies have the ability to recognize different types of music before they are born. As early as six weeks before birth, infants can recognize songs. That means that this happens more than a month before the baby is born! Sometimes the babies will even “dance” to different beats. This means that your child is already showing his or her music preferences-while in the womb! Aren’t you excited about that?
In spite of taking a few months to start forming words that adults can identify, the range of sounds babies can make is amazing. This is due to the fact that a baby’s larynx won’t be finished developing until long after the baby has been born. The flexibility of a new voice box is what makes the baby’s range better than an adult’s range. Babies quickly start to assign the sounds they make to the things that they want or need. This is the way babies teach their parents how to get them what they want-as long as the parents are paying attention they can usually figure it out within a moment or two. A baby’s first word is usually one that he can make using the consonants made by the front of his mouth and a couple of vowel sounds. It is because of this that a baby’s first word is usually “dada” and not “mama”: dada is easier to imitate and is almost always a surprise to both the parent and the baby!
Did anybody ever tell you that when babies first start to grow, they grow a tail along with their other limbs? It is absolutely true! As your baby’s cells divide, the major organs (heart, lungs, brain) begin to form and so does a tail!
Everybody knows that babies use crying to communicate their need for service or attention but did you know that the baby does not cry real tears until he or she is almost a month old? Tears contain stress induced hormones. To calm itself down, the body tries to get rid of the stress induced hormones and forces the tears out of the tear ducts (aka crying). Your baby won’t create this hormone until after you have given birth to him. Sometimes real tears take a few weeks to show up because it takes the baby a while to begin producing the stress hormone. Still other babies can take up to a few months to show signs of actual tears (remember, every baby is different). Babies are really fun to learn about. Nobody knows for sure exactly how they learn or how fast they pick things up. There is nothing like watching a baby grow from an infant into an adult-it is a fascinating and mind boggling process!
There are new discoveries being made constantly about babies and infant development. What scientists believe as fact today could be proven false tomorrow! Is the confusion really unfounded, given how quickly we learn new things about babies? Staying current with the trends can be easy if you don’t mind doing a little bit of homework. Infancy is more complex than people think. They are complex creatures with specific needs and wants. All mothers and fathers need to know how to communicate with their kids. Learning everything you can about how babies develop is also important. Your parenting skills will be better if you understand what is going on.
